Stuff...
Occasionally I produce something useful or discover a site of value.
I have always thought that a "STUFF" page of these things might be of interest to others.
So I have started recording some of these gems here:
A Powershell script that inserts metadata into images using the ExifTool by Phil Harvey.
A consistant way to insert metadata into images taken on my digital camera using a Powershell
script and the ExifTool by Phil Harvey. Details here...
A Powershell script that selects data from a list randomly.
This process selects a rows of data for a number of times, determined by the user. In this way it is
possible for instance to randomly select 40 names out of a list of several hundred...
Details here...
A Powershell script that assists with updating host workstations in a networked environment.
This script makes it easy! Point it to a directory where a list of the
workstations exists (in a .dat file) and where any number of .ps1 and/or .cmd scripts
exist (the scripts that will actually do the updating) and it is all over....
Check it out here...
A Powershell script that extracts most of the inventory data from the
workstation on which it is run
The output data can be sent to an HTML file AND/OR to a MySQL database.
View the output from my current home computer. I really like the
way the script returns the ID value of the processor and the serial number from the BIOS! Get
more information about the "HTML file" version or
more information about the "Database" version.
Allowing us to find discrete information across collected HTML files.
Supporting the Powershell "HTML output" version of the inventory process above.
TimeKeeper
TimeKeeper is a .NET application that acts as
a policeman or referee on users of worktations.
Converting Unix date/time stamps
Converting Unix date/time stamps in VB or VBA for MS Access.
Powershell Script That Detects High Memory Usage On Remote Workstations
This script informs decisions about when to take action on
rebuilding workstations. It also demonstrates how Powershell can email the content of log files...
A Console Application for text based data extraction
A Console Application that assists with text based data extraction which
can be time consuming and cause real hassle, especially if you have to combine data files
without causing a file to "blow out" with duplicated data. To help me with automating a couple of processes,
I wrote a console application in VB .NET. More information about this application here...
The Google Maps API
The Google Maps API lets you embed or "mashup"
a Google Map into your own web page. Uses a JavaScript API supplied by Google. This is how I
did the Map for New Grove on this site! You can add overlays to the
map and display shadowed "info windows" just like Google Maps do. I thought it was pretty cool...
Federated Search
Google Coop lets you filter Googles search
index so that it can be used to search web sites determined by an xml file. The web site(s) selected
by the xml file can be multiple URL's, a single URL site or a single directory in a site. To see this
working go to Federated Search
Sensible Tweaks to Improve Windows XP
There are hundreds of XP tweaks, but you only need the ones in
this site to obtain
a significant performance improvement. Well worth the trouble!
Virtual Machines - Windows Services Modifier Script
I have an issue with the way VMware seems to reserve memory on my Windows XP box even if the
virtual machines are not running. This is my Powershell solution...
A Mini Search Engine - A PHP script that searches a single table in a MySQL database.
I have used this script as the basis to search way more that just one table! (An example is the
Inventory "Database" script I mention above.) The instructions to adapt
it are located here.
General Stuff
Tara's youngest "boy" Bobo who is a local Raglan barrista, has been working on a new venture called
Raglan Roast. We have been using his coffee now for
some months and frankly it is great! A picture of their roaster is
on Bobo brother's Flicker site...
Another of Tara's "boys" has got into photography and has some very good work on
flickr at Social Advances.
I really like his set of photos for
Raglan.
He captures the "feel" of the place...
